President Donald Trump dismissed mounting concerns over the national debt on Saturday, arguing that accelerated economic expansion will resolve the nation’s fiscal shortfall after federal liabilities crossed the $40 trillion threshold.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump addressed the issue shortly after Treasury Department figures showed the monthly budget deficit reached $432 billion in July, marking the largest single-month gap since March 2021.
“It’s been a problem for 35 years and what we have now that we’ve never had before… is we have tremendous growth — and the way you take care of debt is with growth,” Trump said.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed the administration’s stance following the release of the $40 trillion figure, telling CNBC in a Thursday interview that the deficit likely reached its peak and suggesting the department could expand long-term bond buybacks to boost market liquidity.

“There’s nothing magic about the 40-trillion number,” Bessent said. “We can grow our way out of that.”
The growth-focused strategy drew skepticism from prominent Wall Street figures, including Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio and Nathan Thooft, an executive at Manulife Investment Management.

“The Treasury can influence liquidity and sentiment, but it can’t sustainably override growth, inflation, deficits, and supply,” Thooft warned in remarks reported by Bloomberg.
Market indicators reflected shifting investor sentiment following the fiscal data. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) declined 2.43% over the past month, while capital increasingly moved toward assets such as gold and Bitcoin.
