Sony Pictures is giving *Resident Evil* fans their first look at writer-director Zach Cregger's fresh spin on the horror franchise — and it's just as bloody as you’d expect.
Featuring footage previously presented at CinemaCon, a new teaser trailer for the film released today follows frightened medical courier Bryan (Austin Abrams) as he enters a seemingly abandoned home to use the landline after experiencing "a little bit of a problem on the road."
"Hey babe, uh, look, I'm really sorry that we got disconnected earlier, but some things have, uh, happened," Bryan tells a loved one over the phone. "I'm in, like, a seriously f---ed-up situation right now, and it looks like there's a chance that we might not get to talk to each other again."

That's putting it lightly. Clips interspersed between his voicemail message depict Bryan encountering a whole host of infected creatures, including a mangle of bodies crawling out of a doorway and a large, bloated one that appears to be living within the sewer system.
His no good, very bad day continues as Bryan sprints down a street with his medical bag in hand as the infected leap from buildings above and splatter onto the ground around him like blood bags.
"I just wanted you to know…" he says, "I love you."

While the film is based on the popular video game series, Cregger confirmed to* *last September that it's an "entirely original story," adding, "It's just [that] it takes place in the *Resident Evil* world. I don't think fans of the games are gonna be bummed."
But don't expect cameos from beloved characters like Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield. "I'm not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story. I think that would be presumptuous," Cregger said at the time. "But I respect the games enough where I'm gonna, like, tell a *Resident Evil *story in the *Resident Evil *canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games."

Speaking at CinemaCon earlier this month when the footage was first shown, Cregger confirmed that he won't be employing any of his usual "narrative acrobatics" in the film. "You are gonna be locked in with one protagonist, on a foot journey from point A to point B," he said.
Joining Abrams on his onscreen quest to survive the night are Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directed the film from a script co-written with Shay Hatten.
*Resident Evil *checks into theaters on Sept. 18. Watch the teaser trailer above.
