Disney released a new trailer for the live-action Moana film, which includes callbacks to the 2016 animated movie plus new music and dance sequences

Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui alongside newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana in the live-action remake

Auli'i Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda are producers on the new live-action film directed by Tony-winning director Thomas Kail

The final trailer for Moana's new live-action film shows just how far the characters will go this time around!

The new film features newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role from the animated feature film as the demigod Maui, as they embark on a live-action daring ocean voyage to uncover what lies beyond the safety of the reef.

The final trailer features scenes that call back to the original 2016 animated film, as well as some new additions, including a super-sized music sequence to Maui's "You're Welcome," as well as a dance breakdown from Moana's tribe.

The latest trailer also provides new looks at Moana's beloved pig and chicken sidekicks, Pua and Heihei, along with the coconut-shaped Kakamora and lava monster that Moana and Maui must face along their journey.

Johnson isn't the only one reprising his role in the live-action film, as Jemaine Clement is returning as the voice of the giant, glitz-obsessed crab Tamatoa.

John Tui, who appeared in Johnson's autobiographical NBC series Young Rock, costars with Laga'aia as Moana's father, Chief Tui. Frankie Adams plays Moana's mom, Sina, and Rena Owen stars as her grandmother, Gramma Tala.

The latest film follows the success of Disney's 2016 animated musical Moana and its 2024 sequel, in which Johnson voiced Maui. Both became massive box office hits.

The live-action remake, which was directed by Thomas Kail, was announced in April 2023. It is produced by Auli'i Cravalho, the voice of Moana in the animated films, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the voice star and composer behind the original film.

In November 2024, photos of a bulked-up and bare-chested Johnson surfaced from the live-action movie's Hawaiʻi set. "That [suit] is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that on," he later clarified to Extra about his character's look.
