Kestenholz competed for Switzerland in the first-ever Olympic snowboarding event in 1998, winning a bronze medal at the Nagano Games in the parallel giant slalom event.
The Swiss Ski Federation said Kestenholz âwas also among the pioneers at the Olympic premiere of snowboard cross in Turin in 2006.â
âUeli didn't just love snowboarding in all its facets,â the federation said. âAfter retiring from competitive sports in 2006, he remained a professional outdoor athlete â right up to his last breath. He was a freerider, speedrider, paraglider pilot, kitesurfer, skydiver, surfer, wingfoiler, mountain biker â a true crossover athlete.â
Kestenholz first discovered snowboarding when he was 14 years old, going on to become one of Switzerlandâs most cherished riders.
âI skateboarded, I was a windsurfer, but I only skied in the winter, and on two planks," Kestenholz said in an interview with Tamedia two years ago, according to the Swiss Ski Federation. "Snowboarding offered the opportunity to experience my favorite feeling, gliding sideways, even in winter."
