An Oscar-winning actress is booking a return trip to *The White Lotus*.

Last week, Helena Bonham Carter departed the HBO hit, just days into production on season 4, and creator Mike White has now turned to his past for the replacement. ** can confirm that White's *Enlightened* star and collaborator Laura Dern has signed on to join the production.

White is writing a new role that is being specifically developed for Dern, who has actually previously been heard on *The White Lotus*. In season 2, she voiced Abby, the unseen wife of Michael Imperioli's Dominic.

"With filming just underway on Season 4 of *The White Lotus*, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set," HBO said in a statement on Friday. "The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon."

Dern was a natural replacement, considering her longstanding relationship with both HBO and White. The actress first collaborated with the *White Lotus* mastermind on his directorial debut, the 2007 dramedy *Year of the Dog*, and then they co-created and co-starred on the little-seen but beloved HBO series *Enlightened*, for which Dern won a Golden Globe in 2012. Dern took home an Emmy in 2017 for her memorable turn on HBO's *Big Little Lies*.

Season 4 of *The White Lotus* will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees during the week of the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to Dern, the cast will include Vincent Cassel, Chris Messina, Steve Coogan, Heather Graham, and Rosie Perez.
