Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt recalls an important message about love that her parents passed down to her in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE

The author is the eldest child of dad Arnold Schwarzenegger and mom Maria Shriver

Arnold and Shriver, who are divorced, also share three other children: sons Patrick Schwarzenegger and Christopher Schwarzenegger, plus daughter Christina Schwarzenegger

Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt learned an important message about love from her famous parents — dad, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and mom, Maria Shriver.

"I think the most important thing [they've passed down] is that unconditional love is the most important part of being a parent," the bestselling author, 36, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

"And what I think my parents have done for me is that I've felt unconditionally loved at all phases of life," she adds.

Now, Katherine, who recently partnered with Hallmark, says her "biggest goal" as a parent herself is to make sure her children also "feel that from me."

"All of the things my parents did when I was little, when I was growing up, I am really trying to implement or pass down to how I'm raising my kids," she says.

Katherine was born in 1989 and is the eldest of the four children Arnold, 78, and Shriver, 70, share. The pair are also parents to daughter Christina Schwarzenegger and sons Patrick Schwarzenegger and Christopher Schwarzenegger, and the Terminator star is also a dad to son Joseph Baena.

Arnold and Shriver wed in 1986 but split in 2011. They eventually settled their divorce 10 years after filing.

Katherine is a mom to three children with husband Chris Pratt: daughters Lyla Maria, 5, and Eloise Christina, 3, plus son Ford Fitzgerald, 15 months.

The Guardians of the Galaxy actor is also a dad to 13-year-old son Jack, whom he shares with ex-wife Anna Faris.

Arnold and Shriver have supported each other and maintained a close relationship with their family over the years.

Shriver told PEOPLE in 2025 that, despite the pair's split, she was "proud" of how she and Arnold kept the lines of communication between them open.

"We laugh a lot about our kids, our grandkids, ourselves, and we are proud of the fact that we are still in conversation. For almost 50 years," she said.

Previously, Arnold told PEOPLE his "chapter" with Shriver never ended, explaining, "Everything is kind of just as if we're together, but we have separate lives,” he said.

"My chapter with Maria will continue on forever. Even though it’s a different relationship, there’s no reason for me to feel anything other than love for her," he added.
