Jodie Comer is grateful for the lighter energy Hugh Jackman brought to the set of their dark new movie.
When Comer, 33, spoke with PEOPLE at The Death of Robin Hood's New York City premiere on Wednesday, June 10, the actress praised Jackman's ability to lead a movie set with his charm, on top of his own acting prowess.
"I mean, what you see is what you get with him. He cares about the work, like myself," Comer says. "That's first and foremost the most important thing. Then he wants people to feel comfortable and at home, and he also wants to have a good time and have a laugh. There's a lot of humility there, which I feel is really important."
The Death of Robin Hood sees Jackman, 57, portray the legendary English folk outlaw as an older man grappling with the long-term effects of a life of violence. Robin is severely injured in a fight early in the movie, leaving him in the care of Comer's character Sister Brigid at a monastery.
"I think sometimes people can take themselves a bit too seriously, especially within this industry," Comer adds of Jackman's presence on set. "So it's nice to have that levity in what can be quite an intense working environment when you're maybe shooting for six weeks and time is of the essence. So he's amazing."

Jackman's gritty new movie is one in a string of differing projects he has taken on over the last two years. In May, he starred in the witty murder mystery The Sheep Detectives as a kindly shepherd, and before that, he costarred with Kate Hudson in December's Song Sung Blue, the musical drama about a couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute band.
Molly Gordon, who costarred with Jackman in The Sheep Detectives, told PEOPLE in May that she admires Jackman's versatility as a performer. "I think a lot of serious actors don't want to be in joyful things or don't want to be in funny things and take the piss out of themselves," she said. "And he's like, 'I'm gonna destroy this role dramatically. Then I'm gonna do something funny. Then I'm gonna do a musical.' He's not afraid of all the different colors that he can bring."
