A recent post on r/DaveRamsey has sparked a big debate: should we all delete food delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats the same way personal finance expert Dave Ramsey followers famously cut up their credit cards?

The original poster made a bold comparison, writing that deleting these apps should be just as obvious and necessary as ditching high-interest debt tools. “These food delivery apps are a very recent thing,” they wrote. “10 years ago if you wanted food delivered to your house, your only option was pizza and maybe Chinese.”

The Fast-Food Budget Trap

The top comment summed it up in classic Ramsey style: “I suspect that Door Dash and obesity go hand in hand. Financial restraint and culinary restraint are probably on the same plane.” Another added, “You’re spending double to get cold food when you could just go through the drive-thru or get the takeout yourself.”

That sentiment echoed throughout the thread. Many shared how quitting food delivery apps helped them save hundreds per month. One person reported their food bill dropped from over $1,000 to around $270 after they started prepping meals at home. “I did an analysis of my monthly spending using AI, and I was blown away with how much I spend on Uber Eats per month,” another said. “It still added up to $600+. I immediately deleted all my food delivery apps.”

Others pointed out the hidden costs beyond just delivery fees. “A $15 meal becomes $30+ with these apps,” one commenter wrote. Others said that the food is always cold, often missing items, and if you saw the inside of some delivery cars, you'd never order again.

Some Say It's Just About Convenience

Not everyone agreed with deleting the apps outright. Some defended occasional use, especially for emergencies, illness, or when caring for kids.

Others said it's simply a matter of personal values. “It’s about how you value your time. We know that it’s ‘overpriced’ but our time is worth money too,” one person commented. “If out of debt, you have a fully funded [emergency fund], and investing 15% it’s totally fine to use them if it’s your thing,” another added.
