Carrie-Anne Moss teases a “big” scene with Hudson Williams in the upcoming supernatural mystery

Yaga reimagines the Baba Yaga legend and premieres this Friday, Oct. 23

Carrie-Anne Moss is sharing her experience working with the “lovely” Hudson Williams.

During the AMC+ Spotlight Panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, Oct. 9, Moss, 59, teased what it was like acting alongside the Heated Rivalry star, 25, in the horror-mystery series, Yaga. Showrunner Kat Sandler also attended the panel, which featured the stars and creators of other AMC favorites like Kill Jackie, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

“I think I just have one scene with him,” the Canadian actress teased, adding, “It was really great. It’s a big one, though. It’s a big scene. And he’s lovely. And what more can I say? He’s a lovely guy. He’s talented.”

While Moss kept the details of their scene under wraps, Sandler made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect any spoilers just yet. “And she can’t tell you anything about that scene!” the showrunner joked.

The mystery surrounding Williams’ role is fitting for a series that puts a fresh, supernatural spin on one of folklore’s most fascinating figures.

Created by Sandler and based on her 2019 play of the same name, Yaga reimagines the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, a powerful witch often depicted as an unpredictable, morally complicated figure who lives in a hut that stands on chicken legs.

She might fly around in a mortar and pestle, but don’t let the fairy-tale imagery fool you: Baba Yaga is not your typical storybook witch. As Sandler explained during the panel, the legendary figure is “good and evil” and “darkness and light,” operating according to her own moral code.

“I think it really depends on how you define evil,” Sandler said during the panel. “And I think that is undefinable.”

“And I think she’s really sexy,” the creator added.

The eight-episode series transports the mystery to the coastal town of Whittock, where private investigator Rapp (Noah Reid) investigates the disappearance of young fishery heir Henry Park, played by Williams. But Henry isn’t the only character the Heated Rivalry star brings to life. Williams also takes on a second role as Logan, adding another layer of intrigue to his mysterious dual performance.

Moss plays Katherine, a university professor whose connection to Henry puts her in the middle of the investigation. As Rapp digs deeper into the disappearance, a web of secret lives, dark local secrets and ancient magic all begin to surface.

For Moss, the chance to step into the show’s strange and mysterious world was a major draw. The actress, known for playing Trinity in The Matrix franchise, said she was already familiar with the Baba Yaga story before Sandler approached her about the project.

“I know who Baba Yaga is as a story. I’m intrigued by that story and I have been for a long time,” Moss said.

But it was Sandler’s personal approach that helped seal the deal. “Once I talked to Kat, I was very intrigued by it,” Moss explained, adding that she has “a passion for being a part of someone else’s purpose and someone else’s dream.”

“And, of course, I wanted to play the character. It was a juicy, amazing character,” she continued. “I could hear myself in the scenes. The way that she wrote Katherine, I think the tone and the rhythm of her, her voice is something that you could say right away, ‘Oh yeah, I can do that.’ Like, ‘That’s a good, that would be a great role for me. I would have fun doing that.’”

Moss certainly wasn’t short on praise for her fellow cast members, either. While discussing her work with Schitt’s Creek alum Reid, she revealed that the actor “made me laugh harder than I’ve laughed in so long, and I feel I should pay him money for that.”

Yaga has a two-episode premiere Friday, Oct. 23, on AMC+, with new episodes on Fridays until a two-episode finale Nov. 27.
