Boston Blue returned on Friday, Feb. 27, after its 10-week midseason break, finally giving viewers answers after the show ended with an explosive cliffhanger involving Boston Police Department cop (and the youngest member of the Silver law-enforcement family) Jonah Silver.
Indeed, the episode titled "Hard Truths" picked up where the last one left off, with Detective Lena Silver's younger brother standing next to the body of Ronan Flaherty, the recently released man he believes killed his father, Judge Ben Silver.
For context, Flaherty (Jack Murray) is the man who was sent to prison over the shooting of the Silver family patriarch, but was released following a technicality involving the DA's office. Jonah (Marcus Scribner) had a brief run-in with him on the street after his release, before the midseason finale saw him come face-to-face with his dad's suspected killer again in an abandoned building. Shots rang out and the episode ended on a cliffhanger, as it wasn't entirely clear if Jonah was responsible for Flaherty's shooting and, ultimately, his death.

The latest episode of Boston Blue picks up with the Silver and Reagan squad — including Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and his son Sean (Mika Amonsen) — checking out the crime scene. Jonah claims he wasn't responsible for the shooting, before Danny tells the Silver family (including Det. Lena Silver and her sister, Boston Police Department's Superintendent of Detectives Sarah Silver) that he was taking the lead on the investigation due to their family's ties to it.

Jonah is then placed on administrative leave, Sean lies to his dad that he saw the shooter when it happened (spoiler alert: he didn't) and Danny and Sean get into a heated spat over the whole ordeal.
"Maybe you just forgot that I've known how to spot when you're lying since you were a little kid," Danny tells Sean. "Except this isn't about how much candy you and your brother ate on Halloween, this is serious... When you're a cop, you don't just carry the weight of a lie on the job. You carry it to the witness stand."
Despite the harsh words from Danny, Sean joins his dad in the investigation for a rare father-son moment on the job. While that's all going down, Judge Silver's murder video hits the internet — giving the BPD new insight into the crime. And as it turns out, the actual killer was left-handed, while Flaherty was right-handed. "If Ronan Flaherty didn't kill our dad, who did?" Lena asks.
"I don't know, but I'm gonna find out," Danny promises.

Throughout the episode, Danny tries to keep that promise as the rest of the crew does a little digging themselves. Jonah ends up spilling the beans about how a mystery man shot Flaherty and "took off," while DA Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben) goes on the hunt for missing files in relation to her husband's murder case.
Eventually, some paperwork resurfaces in the case, Jonah is cleared for duty and Danny and Sean go on a father-son stakeout that ends in an explosion and high-speed car chase. The crew then connects a man named Doyle O'Keefe to the Flaherty shooting, the car explosion and (most importantly of all), the fatal shooting of Judge Silver that's led them down the rabbithole.
Danny, Sean, Lena and Jonah then go on another stakeout at a local bike shop, where they find O'Keefe trying to make a run for it. Jonah again finds himself in a dangerous position, alone in an alleyway with the suspect... at gunpoint.
"It wasn't personal, it was just a job," O'Keefe tells Jonah of his dad's murder, before a single shot rings out.
Thankfully for Jonah, O'Keefe didn't shoot him. Instead, Sean fired a single non-fatal shot, hit O'Keefe and seemingly saved Jonah's life. "Man, what you did for me in that alley," Jonah tells Sean at the end of the episode.
"Jonah, I always got your back, bro," he responds.
Indeed, O'Keefe's shooting of Judge Silver was a job, and the man responsible for allegedly hiring the hit (a business/property owner by the name of David Laughlin) was also put behind bars at the end of the episode.

Meanwhile, Danny — the NYPD vet who headed to Boston at the start of the series to be closer to his son — made his decision official: He's joining the Boston Police Department. The conclusion of the episode saw Danny holding his new BPD badge.
"You can still call me Brooklyn, but it does feel nice to wear the same badge as my son and my partner," he tells Lena.
Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and new episodes are also available to stream on Paramount+ the next day.
